West End Records is one of the most influential dance labels of the past forty years. The label was founded by Mel Cheren and Ed Cushins in 1976 and would go on to define the sound of New York City during the heyday of disco. Taking its name from the location of its original office, close to Broadway’s Manhatten theatre district and neighbouring Studio 54, the label launched with ‘Sessomatto’ by Sesso Matto, which was produced by Cheren. That sound would eventually filter its way across the dance floors of the world, as West End released a slew of disco classics, including Taana Gardner’s ‘Heartbeat’, Loose Joint’s ‘Is It All Over My Face?’, Barbara Mason’s ‘Another Me’ and the NYC Peech Boy’s ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’, as well as releases by Linda Clifford and the label’s biggest selling single ‘Hot Shot’ by Karen Young. The West End catalogue has become of the great sample sources of modern music and in recent years has been raided by multiple musicians and producers, including Ini Kamoze, Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dog, Notorious B.I.G., Ja Rule and DMX. In the process the late Mel Cheren’s reputation as the ‘godfather of disco’ has been well and truly reinforced. West End is now exclusively owned and administered by BMG as part of the Verse Music acquisition. Includes: Sesso Matto, Taana Gardner, Loose Joint, Peech Boys, Linda Clifford & Karen Young
